In October, Business of the Month had joint winners, Helen Bowman of In The Detail and Lauren McWilliams of For You Photography. Here we talk to Lauren McWilliams to find out a little bit more about her business…
What does your business do / offer?
I specialise in Corporate, Commercial photography and occasionally capture weddings. My main service is working closely with businesses to learn about their services and help them to capture their story for their brand through photography. That includes creating branded stock images that are personal for the clients business and their clients to capturing events and headshots.
What made you set up on your own?
I left my full-time job after becoming ill with my mental health and decided to follow my passion and hobby with photography to see where it would go. It was about taking on a challenge but also just being able to my focus on to something productive which helped me a lot!
What have you found the biggest challenge to date?
Everyday is a learning day, I think the biggest challenge for me is that its only me. If I make a mistake (which happens) or I have a lot of work to do its all on me to fix it and do the work. I’ve learned skills lately that had never even crossed my mind before such as building my own website!
What do you find most rewarding about running your business?
I never dread Mondays anymore, I am so lucky that I get to continue you working with and helping people as well as getting paid to do something creative that I love! I also would like to add that my confidence has grown so much over the past few months which being self employed has really helped with.
What makes North Tyneside a good place to run a business?
North Tyneside has been so amazing in terms of support, advice and building connections. I have learned lots of valuable skills from the Business factory, I’ve built some truly amazing support networks from North Tyneside Business Forum and North Tyneside’s VODA. It’s not only a great place to live but it’s support is so special, something which I am very thankful for.
I know that there are other support services out there for start-ups and business, but nothing has even come close to the support and opportunities I have gained from running my business in North Tyneside.
What one piece of advice would you offer to somebody looking to set out in business?
There are tonnes of support available out there, find it and make the most of it. Just because your setting up on your own does not mean you’re alone. From great support from services like the business factory and the business forum to great networking events with others in your shoes all there to help each other and understand the challenges, highs and lows that you face in self-employment.
