An Interview with North Tyneside Business of the Month enjoymuzic
We interviewed Beth to learn more about our North Tyneside Business of the Month.
What does your business do/ offer?
We sell musical instruments and accessories with an emphasis on beginners, schools and accessibility to music although we also offer great multibuy deals for giggers. We also stock the largest range of music gifts currently in the North East. We have over 2500 sheet music books in store for browsing and order regularly from publishers large and small across the world. Our services include restringing and set-ups for guitars, ukuleles, banjos, mandolins and violins, also a sheet music download and print service as well as on the spot advice 7 days a week.
What made you set up on your own?
When we got married, we decided that working for ourselves would be more flexible, more rewarding and also the ultimate career challenge. We could also see ways of improving the customer service experience in specialist sales to make the environment less intimidating.
What have you found the biggest challenge to date?
Literally, finding ways of telling people we are here has always been and continues to be one of our biggest challenges. We have a superb record for repeat business once a customer finds us so the constant challenge is finding successful ways of reaching people in the first place.
What do you find most rewarding about running your business?
Every aspect of a happy customer experience belongs to us, from making a successful choice of products to offer and forging strong relationships with suppliers to helping each individual find the right thing for them and creating a first class overall experience for the customer. This means that when we receive good feedback or compliments on our service, we can feel we have succeeded as individuals and as a company too.
What makes North Tyneside a good place to run a business?
With great transport links to Northumberland and South Tyneside, we have a large base of potential customers to work with. There is also currently a lot of support for small businesses and a feeling of being championed by public figures, including the Mayor, which is reassuring.
What one piece of advice would you offer to somebody looking to set out in business?
Most people have fixed ideas about the sort of funding/help they need to shape their business as they picture it but don’t let that stop you making the most of the opportunities places like the Business Factory can offer. Sometimes you don’t know what you need until you have it and it’s easy to miss the chance to meet the person or company who can help you if you are too quick to dismiss ideas that take you outside your comfort zone!
